Before starting production on Diceroll Issue II, we held a writing competition with the theme of ‘lies’.
Many psychological research studies indicate that most people lie between once and twice per day. How many lies have you told today? Which were white lies? Which were to save yourself from harm or embarrassment, and which were out of kindness?
How often does your government lie?
Which lies are created for us, and which lies do we participate in as a society?
Which uncomfortable truths do we choose not to think about?
When do broken promises become lies?
And what about the endless litany of lies we tell ourselves?
This theme is rife with potential angles for exploration. We were thrilled to receive so many exceptional submissions across our four categories (short, flash & micro fiction, and poetry), which powerfully interrogate the concept of lies and all its latent implications. We received submissions by writers from seven countries of all different ages and backgrounds, and were particularly pleased to hear from so many young (and already incredibly talented) writers.
Please find our amazing competition winners and runners up below.
